“I would be delighted to work together towards your goals. One of my greatest joys is to connect with the amazing therapists I get to work with in TEAM training.”
“Each person comes with unique needs, desires, dreams, strengths and challenges. My job is to discern these as soon as possible and work collaboratively towards bringing you to where you want to be. I believe in you and in our ability to get you there.”
Dr. Leigh Harrington is a physician, psychiatrist, therapist, trainer, and coach. She grew up in a mid-sized midwestern town with two hard-working parents and a spunky younger sister. She studied Medicine, Public Health, Nutrition, Health Management and Policy in Michigan before becoming a Californian in 2003. She trained in psychiatry for a year in San Diego where she did her medical internship and then at Stanford where she completed her Adult Psychiatry Residency - and met Dr. David Burns who has shaped her thinking about psychotherapy, personal growth, and empowerment. She served as Chief Resident her final year at Stanford. She has worked for Yolo County providing mental health services and administrative leadership for much of the past decade, working as the medical director for mental health services for 5 years. She has worked with UC Davis Department of Psychiatry briefly as a faculty member and for a number of years as a Volunteer Clinical Faculty, teaching Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to residents and medical students. After a brief exploration of Radiology, she returned to Psychiatry and had two beautiful daughters who are the loves of her life. When not enjoying the joy of helping people transform their lives and practices, she works to transform her own life, enjoys each of life’s moments, cherishes connecting with loved ones, growing new love, hiking, biking, running, swimming, cuddling or dancing with her girls, and is currently learning how to play the guitar.
Leigh is eternally grateful to her amazing friends, family and mentors who have been immensely supportive to her. Dr. Harrington is deeply appreciative of Dr. David Burns who has developed and continues to develop amazing tools to transform suffering into peace, joy and empowerment, and to inspire around him the incredible, continually growing, TEAM-CBT Community which Dr. Harrington is thankful to be a part.
She knows the challenge of living the life you have dreamed of, as a parent, as a partner, as a child, as a teacher, as a person, as a role model, as a friend, as a humble human.
Dr. Harrington is connected and committed to each of the people she trains, serves, and works with.

TEAM-CBT
What is TEAM Therapy?
Oh! It’s the best! TEAM-CBT is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) developed by David Burns, MD, physician, psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and author of “Feeling Good” - the most widely referred to self-help book by therapists in the US and Canada, and the newly released “Feeling Great,” along with numerous other fabulous books for the public to empower each and all of us humans to overcome difficulties and transform our lives from suffering to joy and empowerment.
TEAM stands for:
T - Testing - we pay careful attention to details and monitor progress quantitatively each time we are working with clients. We use this data as someone might use a temperature, blood level, or x-ray. We work within and from this data - this is a data driving, and heart-centered approach.
E - Empathy - this is the heart-centered portion of our therapy. We listen with an open, compassionate mind. We don’t try to lead, direct, or advise during this portion of therapy. We communicate our understanding and care for the person we are present with. Empathy can be a natural skill, AND these skills can be learned. Fine tuning these skills provides a road map for connection.
A - Assessing Motivation (Agenda Setting) - As humans, we all vary in our motivation to achieve a goal, even the same goal, over time. At this stage we assess our client’s motivation for the change they seek, establish a common endpoint, and enhance motivation. This is the power house of TEAM Therapy and a total game changer - thank you, David Burns!
M - Methods - There are numerous techniques we use to establish the change our clients seek. It is always empowering for therapists to add to their toolbox with new methods! We use traditional Cognitive Methods, Behavioral Methods (yippee exposure!), as well as uncovering methods, interpersonal methods, motivational methods, and more. Dr. Burns and colleagues are always expanding and adding methods to the toolbox - over 100 now! And Dr. Harrington finds methods we can add to our TEAM-CBT toolbox as well!
